Snapchat Spectacles Have a Unique Appeal
The newest product out by the company that brought you hit social media app, Snapchat, is a pair of sunglasses with a camera attached. I know you’re thinking, “Google Glass already did that and it certainly hasn’t taken off yet.” However, Snap Inc, the company formerly known as Snapchat, is targeting an entirely different audience with their product. The Snapchat Spectacles are clearly directed at the youth market that Snapchat is so popular with. The glasses come in three shades ranging from edgy black to quirky-cute coral and teal. The design looks similar to something Urban Outfitters would produce. The price tag, however, is the most clear sign of the demographic Snapchat Spectacles are aiming for. With a mere $130 price tag, the glasses are like an affordable expansion pack for any teenager whose parents already sprung for the newest iPhone. The Wall Street Journal was the first to hear about this fun new tech in an interview with Snapchat creator and now Snap, Inc CEO, Evan Spiegel. The camera in the glasses records ten-second videos from the wearer’s perspective that sync automatically with your smartphone, making Snapchat posts easier than ever. Spiegel believes that the Spectacles offer a new innovation that will make photography more personal than ever. “It’s one thing to see images of an experience you had, but it’s another thing to have an experience of the experience. It was the closest I’d ever come to feeling like I was there again,” tells Spiegel while describing trying out the Spectacles on a recent vacation. The unique perspective offered by the glasses seems to allow you to relive memories through your own eyes. With Snapchat’s appeal to the youth market, (the demographic with the highest spending potential in the US), the Snapchat Spectacles are sure to make a splash when they debut later this fall.
